How to Break In Raw Denim: The 30-Day Guide Your Customers Need

The first 30 days of raw denim decide the next 10 years of its appearance. Your customer is going to do it either way — better they do it right.

September 3, 2026 · 6 min read · By the INDIGO & CO. Mill Team

Breaking in raw denim is the process of turning stiff, uniformly dark fabric into a garment mapped to one body. It happens through repeated creasing at the same flex points — behind the knees, the hips, the lap. Done deliberately, the results are dramatic. Done randomly, the results are a muddy grey wash nobody wanted.

The 30-Day Method

  1. Days 1–10 — wear, do not wash. Daily wear sets the crease locations. Crouch, cycle, sit on the floor: every deep bend is setting the honeycombs. Store hung, never folded.
  2. Days 11–20 — live in them. Carry phone and wallet in the same pockets; edges begin to rub their own marks. Avoid rain if possible — damp fabric creases randomly.
  3. Days 21–30 — first wash decision. When the smell wins or the shine gets too flat, wash: inside out, cold, mild detergent, no softener, hang dry. Expect <2% shrink on sanforized.
  4. After — repeat cycles. Each wear-wash cycle deepens contrast. The best fades are 12–18 months of this rhythm.

The Three Rules That Matter Most

Why Brands Should Publish This

The break-in period is where raw denim customers either become evangelists or refund. A care card in the box, a page on your site, and a follow-up email at day 30 measurably cut returns and measurably raise repurchase. You sold them a process, not just a pant — teach the process.

Retailer tip

Print a 5-step version of this guide on the pocket flasher or hangtag. It costs cents and it is the most-kept piece of packaging in menswear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long until raw denim gets comfortable?
Noticeably softer after 2–3 weeks of daily wear; fully adapted to the body around 2 months. Heavier weights (16 oz+) take longer but reward with sharper creases.
Should I soak raw denim before wearing?
Only if it is unsanforized — then a warm soak before first wear is mandatory. Sanforized raw can go straight to wear; the first wash waits until the fabric needs it.
Do fades really differ that much between people?
Yes — thigh shape, gait, wallet pocket, sitting habits all crease differently. Two identical jeans worn by two people for a year look like different washes.
