"Japanese selvedge" carries a premium built on four decades of genuine craft and genuinely brilliant marketing. Chinese selvedge carries a perception lag of about fifteen years. The honest comparison separates the loom facts from the label value.
What Actually Differs
| Factor | Japan | China (vertical mills) |
|---|---|---|
| Shuttle loom population | Deep — vintage Toyodas, maintained obsessively | Substantial and growing, condition varies by mill |
| Slub character | Irregular, pronounced, famous | Mill-dependent: precise to deliberately irregular |
| Fabric price | Highest | 30–50% lower at comparable spec |
| Lead time | Long — demand exceeds capacity | Shorter, more schedule-flexible |
| Custom selvedge ID | Prestige: yes, slowly | Yes, quickly, at practical MOQs |
| Label value at retail | Strong — collectors pay for it | Improving, still a discount |
What Does Not Differ (Anymore)
- Rope dyeing discipline: the dip process is standardized; a 6-dip indigo in Okayama and a 6-dip indigo in Zhejiang are chemically the same idea.
- Weight and construction accuracy: top Chinese mills hold tolerances as tightly as anyone.
- Audit-grade compliance: export-focused Chinese mills run BSCI/SMETA/OEKO-TEX as table stakes.
Where the Real Gaps Remain
Japan retains an edge in extreme-character fabrics — wild slubs, irregular tension, experimental weights — because its market rewards experimentation. China retains an edge in everything that requires scale plus speed: custom selvedge IDs, quick sampling, order sizes that fit actual brands rather than collector lotteries.
The Buyer's Decision Rule
- Selling the country as the story (heritage flagships, collector pricing): Japan, and pay for it knowingly.
- Selling the product as the story (your brand, your fades, your margins): Chinese selvedge from a vertical mill — same looms, same chemistry, custom ID, faster and 30–50% less.
- Verify either: visit or video the looms, weigh the fabric, cut-check the selvedge edge. The 30-second check works in any country.
We are a Chinese mill writing this. That is exactly why we drew the table honestly — the fastest way to lose a professional buyer is to oversell origin, and the fastest way to win one is to know your own gaps.
