Narrow Fabric, Real Math: How Selvedge Width Changes Cutting Yield and Your Landed Cost

Before you negotiate a selvedge price, understand why it is higher. Half of it is loom speed; the other half is pure geometry.

Wide fabric is not just "more fabric" — it changes how many garment parts fit in a marker, which changes how many meters you buy per pair, which changes your landed cost. Selvedge denim is woven on narrow shuttle looms, and the arithmetic follows you all the way to the container.

The Marker Math

A marker is the cutting layout — the paper pattern of every panel of the jean arranged on a fabric ply. On a 60-inch wide fabric, a skilled marker maker nests fronts, backs, pockets, and waistbands side by side. On a 32-inch selvedge fabric, roughly half as many pieces fit per meter, and every leg must also be placed so the selvedge edge lands exactly on the outseam — the traditional way selvedge jeans are cut.

How to Check a Mill's Yield Claim

  1. Ask for fabric consumption per pair in meters, by size.
  2. Ask for the marker efficiency percentage (used area ÷ total area).
  3. Benchmark: selvedge five-pocket jean consumption typically runs 1.5–1.8 m per pair versus 1.1–1.3 m wide-loom.

Ways to Protect the Yield

The Honest Pitch

When your customer asks why selvedge costs more, "because the loom is narrower" is the true and respectable answer. The premium buys a woven edge, a slower fabric with character, and a cutting process that respects both. That is a story worth paying for — once you can explain the math.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much more fabric does a selvedge jean use?
Typically 40–70% more per pair for the same style, driven by narrow width and the requirement to place the selvedge on the outseam.
What is marker efficiency?
The share of fabric area occupied by garment panels. Higher efficiency means less waste. Good selvedge programs run lower efficiency than wide-loom but recover it through offal usage.
Do all selvedge jeans show the edge on the outseam?
Traditionally yes — it is the point of the fabric. Showing the edge requires cutting with it, which constrains markers. Some modern styles hide it, which usually signals selvedge fabric used for story rather than construction.
