How to Wash Raw Denim Without Ruining the Fades: A Care Guide

Nobody ruins raw denim by wearing it. They ruin it in the first careless wash.

September 10, 2026 · 5 min read · By the INDIGO & CO. Mill Team

The fear of washing raw denim is overblown — indigo set properly in ring-dyed yarn survives washing. What ruins fades is how jeans get washed: hot water, aggressive detergent, machine agitation, and tumble drying. Control those four and washing becomes what it should be: a contrast-deepening event.

When to Wash

The Method

  1. Turn jeans inside out, zip and button closed.
  2. Cold or lukewarm water (<30°C), mild detergent, no fabric softener, no bleach.
  3. Machine on gentle, or hand-agitate in a tub for 20–30 minutes.
  4. Rinse until water runs clear.
  5. Hang dry, inside out, away from direct sun. Never tumble.

Why Each Rule Exists

RuleReason
Inside outProtects the outer face from abrasion in the drum
Cold waterHeat accelerates indigo loss across the whole garment
No softenerCoats fibers, dulls the dry surface fades live on
Hang dryTumble heat + tumbling = allover fade + shrink
Closed zippersPrevents hardware scratching the fabric itself

Spot Cleaning Between Washes

Damp cloth, tiny drop of detergent, work the spot locally, air dry. Most "washes" raw denim needs are actually spot cleans. The bathtub-soak folklore (wearing jeans in a bath) works, but offers no advantage over the tub method above — and makes an awkward afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will washing fade my raw denim all over?
A small amount of overall indigo loss is normal and even helps contrast — the creased areas keep losing more than the flat ones. Hot water and long cycles are what cause allover flatness.
Can I machine wash raw denim?
Yes — gentle cycle, cold, inside out, alone or with darks. The machine is not the enemy; the hot heavy cycle is.
How much will they shrink when washed?
Sanforized under 1–2%, mostly in length. Unsanforized does its big shrink on the first soak/wash — 6–10% — which is why it should be soaked before tailoring.
