OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for Denim: What It Certifies and What It Doesn't

OEKO-TEX answers exactly one question: is there anything harmful left in this fabric?

September 29, 2026 · 5 min read · By the INDIGO & CO. Mill Team

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is an independent product certification testing finished textiles for a long list of harmful substances — restricted azo dyes, formaldehyde, heavy metals, phthalates, and more. For denim specifically, it covers the fabric, sewing threads, and trims that carry the label. It is the certificate nearly every consumer-facing buyer asks for first.

What It Tests

Product Classes Matter

Testing strictness scales with skin contact. Denim for adults is Class II (direct skin contact). Children's denim must certify to Class I — baby-grade limits, which are significantly tighter on several substances. If you are sourcing kidswear, the certificate you check must say Class I.

What It Does NOT Certify

Practical Buyer Checklist

  1. Ask for the certificate number and verify it in the OEKO-TEX public database — expired and lapsed certificates circulate.
  2. Check the product class matches your use (Class I for kids).
  3. Check the certified article list actually includes your fabric construction, not just a similar one.
  4. Certificates renew annually with retesting — confirm validity dates cover your delivery window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does OEKO-TEX cover the finished jean or just fabric?
The certificate covers the articles listed on it. For a full-garment claim, fabric, threads, and trims must all be certified — ask which articles are on the mill's certificate.
Can a fabric be OEKO-TEX certified and still fade normally?
Yes — certification restricts harmful chemistry, not indigo itself. Ring-dyed indigo fades exactly as it should on certified fabric.
How do I verify an OEKO-TEX certificate is real?
Take the certificate number and search it in the public OEKO-TEX "find my certificate" database. Validity, scope, and article lists are all visible there.
