BSCI vs. Sedex SMETA vs. GOTS: Which Denim Audit Your Buyer Actually Needs

Certificates do not create compliance. They document it — and each one documents a different thing.

September 22, 2026 · 7 min read · By the INDIGO & CO. Mill Team

Buyers ask for audit paperwork by name, but the names answer different questions. BSCI and SMETA audit how workers are treated. OEKO-TEX tests what is in the fabric. GOTS certifies the organic chain of custody. Buying all five certificates at once is expensive; buying the wrong one first is worse.

What Each One Actually Verifies

Do They Overlap?

BSCI and SMETA overlap heavily — both are social-compliance audits — and many buyers accept either, though formal mutual recognition is limited. OEKO-TEX and GOTS barely overlap at all: one tests chemistry, the other traces organic cotton. ISO standards are about process discipline, not outcomes. Budget accordingly.

A Sensible Order for a Growing Mill

  1. OEKO-TEX 100 first: it is product-level, relatively fast, and nearly every consumer-facing buyer asks for it.
  2. SMETA or BSCI second: pick based on where your customers sell — US/UK lean SMETA, EU retail leans BSCI.
  3. GOTS only if you sell organic claims: it is a chain-of-custody commitment covering the cotton from farm to garment.
  4. ISO when enterprise buyers arrive.

Reading an Audit Report Like a Buyer

Open the findings section first. A report with zero findings is either perfect or fictional; experienced buyers read the corrective actions and dates. What you want to see is a factory that finds its own issues and closes them — not one that photographs well for two days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BSCI accepted in the US?
Partially. US buyers more commonly request SMETA or their own audit protocol. If you sell on both sides of the Atlantic, SMETA has broader recognition, but check each buyer's accepted list before paying.
Does OEKO-TEX mean organic?
No. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests for harmful substances in the finished product. Organic claims require GOTS or equivalent chain-of-custody certification — they answer different questions.
How often are audits renewed?
BSCI and SMETA are typically annual or biennial; OEKO-TEX certificates renew yearly with product retesting; GOTS is annual with transaction-certificate tracking per order.
